The Social Life of Books: Publishing in Contemporary Art Climes

April 8, 2016 | News

This Saturday, April 9, at 4pm at Editions Kavi Gupta (Editions | Kavi Gupta835 West Washington BoulevardChicago, IL, 60607), I’ll be participating in a conversation about publishing/art/curating/writing. In their words:  ” Join us for a conversation between François Piron and Caroline Picard. Both curators, critics, and publishers, Piron and Picard will be discussing their practices and the entwined roles of art presses and galleries. François Piron, cofounder of castillo/corrales and Paraguay Press, visits with students from ESNBA Lyon, where Piron teaches, to discuss contemporary art publishing and the transformation of a gallery into a press. Paraguay Press publishes the series The Social Life of the Book (SLOB), commissioning texts to investigate the circulation and activist potential of textual material around art. Artist and writer Caroline Picard codirects gallery/bar/bookstore Sector 2337 and is executive director of The Green Lantern Press. Operating a press within a gallery, Picard is continually opening up questions of publishing’s relationship to art as a co-dependent supplement or autonomous ally. Picard’s writing has appeared in, Flash Art International, Paper Monument, e-flux and others. Editions | Kavi Gupta is enthusiastic to invite you to the inaugural event of our spring series of conversations, panels, and roundtables.”
